Spearheaded by over-all organizers Joel Andrew F. Sollestre and Mark Ian G. Luis, the University of the Philippines Circle of Engineering Students (UP CREST) held its 3rd IMPACT: Inter-High Mathematics and Physics Competition last November 16, 2015 at the College of Education Training Center. This annual Inter-High competition aims to sharpen the students’ aptitude in Mathematics and Physics; areas of knowledge which are both vital in the field of Engineering.

Hosted by Ria Faye Fernandez and Justin Kyle Marasigan, the recent edition of the competition was actively participated by over 11 teams of public and private secondary schools in the National Capital Region (NCR). Following a two-level competition, the participants were challenged with different mathematical problems such as Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Statistics and Physics.

A written exam served as the elimination round, where the organizers selected the top 10 for the last round of the competition: the quiz bee proper. Judging the competition were instructors from the university namely Rolando Perez III and Mark Jayson Celiz, both from the Institute of Mathematics, and Angilo Carigma, an alumnus from the Institute of Civil Engineering.

For the second part of the Bayanihan event, the University of the Philippines Circle of Engineering Students (UP CREST) aims to promote the care for the nature by participating once again in the watershed adoption of Ipo Dam. Last September 26, 2015, eighteen volunteers from UP CREST made their way to Ipo Dam in Norzaragay, Bulacan to take part in a tree planting activity.

The volunteers received warm greetings from the locals residing on the shores of the watershed. After a few minutes of appreciating the beauty of Ipo Dam, they were then ecstatic to add young trees to the scenery. In order to get to the planting site, the volunteers would need to ride boats to get across the watershed. Luckily, the locals in the area were willing to lend their boats for just a small price.

After reaching the planting site, the volunteers were given preliminary instructions on how to properly plant the seedlings - from removing the seedlings from its container, to placing them on holes which were already dug by the locals, and finally, covering the holes with ample amount of soil to keep it in place. The volunteers, with their eagerness to help, were able to finish planting the seedlings in no more than an hour giving them plenty of time to ride on boats and sail around the dam.

Aside from volunteering for the tree planting activity, UP CREST has also pledged to donate one hundred seedlings. Each pledge costs Php 20, which will be given to the project as funds for buying one seedling.

Through this event, the students once again strengthened their thrust of volunteerism. Next year, the organization pledges to donate more seedlings and to find other places where there is a need to plant trees. Everyone is encouraged to join the advocacy as we advance towards a greener community.

The University of the Philippines Circle of Engineering Students (UP CREST) kicks off the academic year with Have You Seen the Sines? held last August 20, 2015 at the Institute of Mathematics. This event is a math series primer for freshmen students organized by the Academic Affairs Committee. Its objective is to prepare freshmen in the challenge brought by the math series subjects (Math 17, 53, 54, and 55) as they start their academic journey in UP.

Among the speakers was Mr. John Gabriel Pelias, a math genius himself known for his academic achievement and now a respected instructor, who introduced the math series to the freshmen and also gave effective study tips. Speakers who also graced the event were Mr. Aaron Ramos, also a math instructor, who led the review sessions in preparation for the students’ First Long Exam in Math 17, and Anjilo Carigma, a UP CREST alumnus and honor student, who provided strategic study habits for the attendees.

The goal of promoting academic excellence has reached a greater height with Have You Seen the Sines? as an initiative of UP CREST as part of its service to the students of UP. As an extension of this event, the Academic Affairs Committee shall continue conducting review sessions for the remaining long exams in Math 17 of this semester.
